December 17, 2013

What a great weekend! If nothing more than it was back to Fall in Southern California - warm and clear. Nothing says holiday cheer like warm Santa Anas blowing outside while watching football being played in the snow!

Last week was our holiday party where we celebrated all that we accomplished this past year. It was a great excuse to get together with everyone away from the hussle and bussle of calls, emails, support tickets, and the ever present alert going off. Some of the awards we presented included Most Support Tickets Closed to Sam Santiago, Rookie of the Year to Bryan Frank, a 5 Year award to Layla Khorsand (our Implementation Services Supervisor), a 15 Year award to Alex Kazmin (our Director of Consulting Services), and a 20 Year award to Dee Perez (our Manager of Operations). Wow! 20 Years. Hard to believe Dee was only 9 when she started here! Seriously though, these numbers can only begin to give you a glimpse of the quality of the people we have on the team here. Our guys (and gals) rock! You can see pictures from the night here.

While it's always great to look back in pride at what we've accomplished, I believe it's more important to be looking forward. As Colin Cowherd often says, "we drive using the windshield, not the rear view mirror." 2014 should be an interesting year. There's a ton of work we have lined up with Office 365, our own hosted cloud environment, and the ever present on-premise upgrades. We're also doing more and more SharePoint and web development work these days. And, as always, we continue to look for talent to add to the team. As we say internally, "ABH" (Always Be Hiring!).

Lastly, please note the date for our upcoming Open House. The last one was a rousing success and we have more things up our sleeve for this one. If you're interested in attending, please send us an email to confirm.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter, wish you all the best during this holiday season, and wish you a healthy and happy New Year!

Banking Malware Infections Rise to Highest Level Since 2002

Malicious software aimed at stealing online banking credentials surged in the third quarter of this year to a level not seen since 2002, according to a new report from Trend Micro.

Cybercriminals plant ZeuS on websites that will then attack visitors and install the malware if the computer has a software vulnerability. It can then steal online banking credentials and send the details to a remote server, among many other malicious functions.

Brazil Takes Step Towards Country Cloud Computing

Dilma Rousseff, Brazil's president, has brought her country one step closer to enforcing a cloud computing policy designed to keep data within the country. A bill aimed at protecting Web privacy was amended to include a provision that would require cloud providers to have infrastructure within the country. Brazil's actions are just the beginning of a world wide movement to protect and secure data from the perceived threats of untrustworthy US public cloud vendors who have been accused of providing the US government with near unfettered access to customer data.

Windows XP Retirement

RIP Windows XP

Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003: Support Ends April 8, 2014

If you haven't already heard, Microsoft's Windows XP operating system is being retired next year. And we're less than four months away from that event. Considered revolutionary in its day, XP was released worldwide for retail sale on October 25, 2001.

What does the retirement mean to you? It means that Windows XP Pro will no longer receive any sort of updates or support from Microsoft. Those crazy folks out there who create malware to wreak havoc on the rest of us will then have a field day. When Windows XP retires, it will not be long before a network with a Windows XP machine will be infected.

While the jury is still out on Windows 8, Windows 7 has been a solid operating system almost since day one.

If you have a Windows XP or a mixed network it's time to start planning your upgrades. If you have any questions or are looking for a trusted partner to help ease the transition, please give us a call.

Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action

by Simon Sinek

Why do you do what you do? Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with "why." It was their natural ability to start with "why" that enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things.

In studying the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way -- and it's the complete opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea "The Golden Circle," and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be lead, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with "why."

Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, Sinek weaves together a clear vision of what it truly takes to lead and inspire. This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or who wants to find someone to inspire them.
