March 6, 2013

I'd like to start off this month's newsletter by giving thanks to the people who've helped make our success happen - to our clients, our staff, and our valued partners. Often times, it doesn't get said enough, so - Thank You. Without you, we wouldn't be where we are today.

And where are we? (you may ask). Well, physically we've now been in our new office suite for a few months and have had the time to settle in, get everything put away, and become acclimated to a new way of doing things (or at least knowing where everything now is). And now that the dust has settled, the other day we pulled back the curtain and, as they say, shared with some of our clients and partners how the magic is made. What I mean is that for one night we shut down, opened our doors, and celebrated our "new digs". We shared some good food and drink and spent some time thanking our clients, staff, and partners. A rousing "shout out" to Microsoft and ShoreTel for attending and presenting the latest in their offerings. Between all the interest in the new MS Surface Tablets and the ShoreTel VOIP phone system, they were busy all night long. We also showcased some of of our wares - between showing off our new Network Operations Center / HelpDesk and demoing how we manage mobile devices for our clients, many of our staff were quite busy. Check out this video to get sense of how it went:

Afterwards, one of the benefits I got to enjoy was delivering the good news to Karen Fink, Controller of Mount Sinai Memorial Parks, that she was the winner of our Open House raffle - a new Samsung Galaxy tablet. Congratulations Karen!

By all accounts our Open House was a rousing success! So, thank you to everyone involved. There will definitely be more to come.

On a completely different topic, as you will see below (in Recent Hacks & Outages) February seems to have been a busy month for hackers. Evernote, Zendesk, and NBC were all hacked and Microsoft's Azure Cloud took a hit with a misconfigured SSL certificate - which leaves me wondering how on earth this can possibly happen? All I know is - I guard my passwords with my life; I don't use basic, easy ones; and I use different passwords across all of my hosted accounts.

And while we're talking security, we've been seeing quite a big buzz in the area of Mobility. Our webinars have had some great attendance over the last few months and we continue to take on managing more and more mobile devices for our clients. This is definitely a hot topic these days. No question.

So there you have it. A quick update on our goings-on. I hope you enjoy the newsletter and be sure to check out our upcoming webinars.

Does BYOD Cost Too Much?

It's a good bet you don't know how much your company is spending on all those "Bring Your Own Device" smartphones and tablets. Even worse, it's probably too much, says a mobility management expert. Are you saving money with "Bring Your Own Device" smartphones? The question has many CIOs stumped. Tech analysts, too, have taken opposing views, with one firm predicting hidden costs will derail BYOD this year. Companies such as VMware claim millions in BYOD savings, while mobile consultants and management vendors describe alarming losses.

Microsoft's Outlook.com Takes On Google Gmail

Microsoft's newly revamped Outlook.com free email service is now available to all users, some seven months after it was introduced in a limited preview mode to replace Hotmail, Microsoft's longtime email offering. With the new and refreshed Outlook.com service and its updated and friendlier user features, Microsoft hopes to continue to lure users over from Gmail and other services. In the last six months alone, 60 million people have signed up to use new Outlook.com email accounts.

Oops: 10 Common Mistakes on Twitter

Recently, I asked my Twitter followers to point out a few things I'm doing wrong on my own feed, and also point out common mistakes from other users. Usually, I'm on top of my game: retweeting articles, engaging in conversation, and scheduling posts to make sure my feed is active. But my followers politely pointed out that I've been making some common mistakes - and I bet you are, too.

Below are the eleven most important principles to integrate to become a better leader:

7 Things Confident Leaders Don't Do

If you've been around long enough, you begin to realize that success is just as much about what you don't do as what you do. Any CEO, entrepreneur, or venture capitalist will tell you that lack of focus is one of their most insidious enemies. In my experience, and I've worked with hundreds of successful executives and business leaders, there are certain things they simply don't do. I don't know if they're instinctive or cognitive, but I've noted seven things they rarely, if ever, do.

File This Under: What is She Thinking?

The newly hired CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, is already making waves - and I would think from her employees' perspective, not in a good way. She recently sent out a decree that basically said Yahoo'ers would no longer be allowed to work from home (you can read the actual Yahoo internal memo here). While this might only affect 250 or so full-time remote workers (and will certainly spill over into the "remote 1 or 2 day a weekers"), it seems to be an about-face to the Gen Xers and Millenials making up a large percentage of their "dot com" the work space.

How the Cloud Can Protect Your Business From Natural Disasters Like Hurricane Sandy

For the most part and because of our warm and sunny climate, most businesses in LA don’t think twice about protecting themselves from the natural disasters that have been going on around the rest of the county. Beyond the certain segment of our clients who really take the concept of Business Continuity seriously, really, the biggest "blip" in interest in this topic...

Staff Spotlight - Dee Perez

Dee Perez

As the Manager of Operations, Dee is responsible for the overall operations of the company - from the quality of service delivery to managing our human "Capital". Having been with FPA for well over 18 years, Dee has certainly seen a lot in that time (although doing the math, it means she must have started here when she was 11!). Dee is the "hub" of FPA ensuring that clients are happy, staff are happy, and we're doing everything to the level we're supposed to be. She's an integral part of the management team and a key reason for our continued success.

When not at FPA, Dee enjoys her free time with her family and rockin' out to Coldplay, Train, Counting Crows, and the occasional Journey song.

Client Kudos
