February 5, 2013

As they say, "the only constant in the universe is change". And nothing could say "change" these day more than Dell going private, Microsoft going into hardware, RIM becoming Blackberry, and Apple shrinking. For me, I could say the other constant in my life has been FPA. With nearly 22 years under our collective belts, many things have come and gone, but we're still here doing what we do with the people we love doing it with.

While we've had our fair share of change over the years, most of the change we've gone through recently is more of the slow and steady kind. The bigger we get, the steadier we are. However, we don't rest on our laurels nor take anything for granted.

Behind the curtain, we refer to ours as a "culture of constant improvement". We're always looking at ways to improve everything we do. That said, we're always looking at improving the quality of our services, adding capabilities, and providing more for our clients. While we've recently "officially" partnered with ShoreTel (to provide the industry leading VOIP solution) we continue to add staff certifications in the latest and greatest Microsoft offerings. While we've added additional maintenance routines performed by our Network Operations Center, we've also added educational webinars to improve the knowledgebase of our clients and friends.

And while we always look to ensure we're doing what needs to be done right now, we also balance that with looking to the future.

One of the key business decisions we recently executed was our move to a bigger (and better) office suite. This wasn't done just because our lease was up, but rather we looked at it as an opportunity to leverage who we are and how we do what we do for our continued growth into the future. And to celebrate this, on Wednesday, February 20th we're holding an Open House for our valued clients, friends, and partners. Please join us at 5:00pm for food and drinks and allow us to showcase some of how we do what we do. Naturally, please RSVP if you'd like to join us. We'd love to have you!

Dell in $24 Billion Deal to Go Private

Dell announced on Tuesday that it had agreed to go private in a $24.4 billion deal led by its founder and the investment firm Silver Lake, in the biggest leveraged buyout since the financial crisis. Under the terms of the deal, the buyers’ consortium, which also includes Microsoft, will pay $13.65 a share in cash. That is roughly 25 percent above where Dell’s stock traded before word emerged of the negotiations of its sale.

The Cost of IT Convenience

CFOs looking to cut IT spend should start by telling employees it’s time to drop DropBox, send YouSendIt packing, and dump Google Docs.

Consumer-oriented collaboration and file-sharing tools that have gained popularity as the workforce becomes increasingly mobile are customarily cheap, even free, for employees to use. But they could be costing businesses plenty, a recent study suggests. Cloud-computing and mobile devices enable employees to take advantage of consumer-grade, file-sharing programs such as Google Docs, DropBox, and YouSendIt to save, edit, and share work-related data and documents. While the tools boost efficiency, they can also open the enterprise’s doors to hackers and significantly increase the risk of data leaks, says Larry Ponemon, founder of Ponemon Institute, an independent research center that examines privacy, data protection, and information-security policies.
