What would the last newsletter of the year be like without
a look back reflecting on some the trends and technologies
that made an impact in 2010? While the industry may be abuzz
with hot topics like Facebook, Twitter, and the iPad we've
seen some other interesting things providing more real-world
impacts for our small business clients - things like the emergence
of cloud computing and the introduction of server virtualization.
During this last year, we've seen our clients benefit over
and over from some of the latest technologies available like:
- moving Exchange from in-house servers to hosted "Cloud"
solutions - reducing costs and improving service levels
- implementing hosted applications - reducing IT costs giving
clients access to systems they couldn't otherwise afford
- increasing the number of staff who work remotely - increasing
productivity as well as job satisfaction
- implementing remote network monitoring and alerting -
improving our ability to address issues long before they
become problems impacting productivity
- having our NOC manage and maintain client networks - efficiently
and effectively cutting ongoing IT costs
- implementing Intel vPro based workstations - improving
response times to resolve issues increasing productivity
- providing in-house and offsite backup and fail-over server
capabilities in a unified BDR solution - cost effectively
addressing business continuity concerns
- implementing server virtualization solutions - reducing
power consumption, increasing server redundancy, and improving
As they say, "the times, they are a changing".
Who would have thought when these words were written years
ago that they could so aptly describe the technology breakthroughs
we've seen in the year 2010? Personally, I can't wait to see
what's ahead in 2011. Whatever it is, be sure FPA will be
leading the way to help our clients take advantage of them...
We wish you all a Happy Holiday season, a Happy New Year
and continued success in 2011!

Reasons You Should Let Your Employees Work Remotely
Does your business offer your staff the ability
to work remotely? If not, it might be time to consider it.
Here at FPA, we’ve long been proponents of letting staff
work from home. If not only because it makes them so much
happier but also because it makes them so much more productive.
If you’re resisting the idea, there are plenty of not-so-warm-and-fuzzy
reasons to enable virtual work. Click here
to see three.
Do's and Don'ts of Social Media
Social media and social networking are quickly becoming the
"de facto" standard for business. A recent study
by a Chicago-based firm, Slack Barshinger, showed that small
and medium-size businesses are getting “heavily involved
with social media, with about half using blogs, wikis, Twitter
or other social media channels for business purposes.”
If your company is not yet engaged, it might be time to jump
in before your competitors beat you to the punch. Here
are ten basic rules.
& Disaster Recovery
Do you know if your backup is working? More
importantly - are you backing up everything you need to? Most
importantly - can you restore it all?
While these may seem like simple questions,
they're actually the root of all problems during a disaster.
Studies have shown that 93% of companies who lose data or
access to their systems for just 10 days file for bankruptcy
within a year while 50% file for bankruptcy immediately*.
Data loss can be devastating and having a reliable backup
and disaster recovery system in place can mean the difference
between staying afloat or not.
FPA offers a reliable and highly cost effective business
continuity solution for our clients. With our advanced system,
you'll never have to worry about losing your information or
access to your critical systems again. Our BDR solution is
fast, reliable, secure, and most importantly highly cost effective.
As a fully integrated solution it provides the following capabilities:
- Local backup with infinite restore points and rapid recovery
- Online storage in the cloud
- Fail-over to a virtual server within an hour - providing
timely business continuity
As compared to the individual costs and capabilities of standard
tape backups, server imaging, and online storage it's proving
to be a winner for our clients.

Conversation re: Downtime
I recently had a rather interesting conversation with a client
about downtime. Actually, it didn't start out as a conversation,
but rather as a directive. Our client was communicating (quite
emphatically no less) that they couldn't be down at all, ever.
Not for maintenance. Not for upgrades. Let alone as the result
of a disaster. Never. Literally 5 nines (ie: 99.999%) of uptime
wasn't good enough...
