November 3, 2010
It's hard to believe Halloween's over, Thanksgiving's around
the corner, and then the Holiday Season's almost here. 2010
seems to have flown by.
In keeping with our vision of always looking for new ways
to increase the value in what we do, we've added a couple
of new sections to our newsletter. First we've added an area
spotlighting key strategic partners. This month we're showcasing
TelcomInsight. We've been partnering with them for years assisting
our clients with a way to keep telecom costs in check. They're
highly professional and always come through.
Our other addition we're most proud of is where we highlight
one of the many charities we're aligned with or provide services
to. This month we're featuring Hurdle Jumpers: a non-profit
organization providing personal care kits for patients being
treated for cancer. Founded by Janet Halbert (a long time
FPA client), they positively impact the quality of life of
everyone they touch. Please check them out.
Here's to a great November and Happy (early) Thanksgiving!

Phases Out Windows XP

October 22, 2010.
If you’ve been using Microsoft XP for a long time –
with good reason, XP being one of the most stable operating
systems in the Windows line – it might be time to finally
migrate up to the new Windows 7.
While Microsoft has officially ceased sales for the popular
OS, the software giant is now dedicating most of its resources
and efforts to its latest OS, Windows 7. XP support will continue
until April 2014. That’s less than four years from now
and (of course) Microsoft is recommending users switch to
As for compatibility issues, Microsoft assures users that
most programs that work with XP will also work on Windows
7. “Windows 7 is designed to be compatible with the
most popular hardware and software products you use every
day. Thousands of these will work just fine,” reads
a FAQ entry on their website. There is also the Windows
7 Compatibility Center, where you can check programs to
ensure they will work on the new Microsoft OS.
We've been migrating clients over to Windows 7 for months
now and haven't run into any significant compatibility issues
that we haven't been able to solve.

& Disaster Recovery
Information and the underlying technology infrastructure
are the life blood for most businesses. And studies have shown
that 93% of companies who lose data or access to their systems
for just 10 days file for bankruptcy within a year while 50%
file for bankruptcy immediately*. Data loss can be devastating
and having a reliable backup and disaster recovery system
in place can mean the difference between staying afloat or
FPA now offers a reliable and highly cost effective business
continuity suite for our clients. With our advanced system,
you'll never have to worry about losing your information or
access to your critical systems again. Our BDR solution is
fast, reliable, secure, and most importantly highly cost effective.

- Encryption of backup files using a 256-bit military grade
- Cost effective online storage in the cloud
- Secure online storage at redundant locations around the
- Full server restores to bare metal, to dissimilar hardware
or to and from virtual environments
- Fail-over to a virtual server within an hour (providing
timely business continuity)
As compared to the individual costs and capabilities of standard
tape backups, server imaging, and online storage it's proving

Coupled with the iPad VPN connecter, the Wyse
app turns the iPad into a functional remote desktop providing
complete access to your Terminal Server or desktop via RDP.
The beauty of this app is that it truly does turn my iPad
from a great output device into something significantly more
powerful. At any point in time and wherever I am, I can connect
to my office and access anything I could as though I were
in the office.
Another huge winner.
Benefits of Virtualization
When companies virtualize the hardware with hypervisor technologies
such as VMware Infrastructure or HyperV, they empower themselves
to make more flexible, dynamic choices in their application
deployment and their allocation of resources — business
benefits that affect the bottom line — including higher
server utilization, improved service levels, ability to better
meet changing business requirements, and increased business
continuity and disaster recovery.
Some benefits include:
- Zero downtime maintenance
- Freedom from vendor-imposed upgrade cycles
- Pooling hardware resources
- Virtual hardware to support legacy operating systems
- Dynamic resource sharing
- Security and Fault Isolation
- Business continuity and backups
